5th Unit-A Reading: The Storeyed House (Part-I)

The conductor asked the passengers to get down and they all put their strength to push the bus. (22) Having gained this initial momentum, the bus has started. Passengers clambered up, jostling one another. (23) The conductor rang the bell yet the bus gradually took on speed. (24) It entered the village reluctant like a truant child being dragged to school. As it wound its way through the curves on the outskirts, it groaned and croaked like a hen about to lay eggs, and stopped with a being in front of Bhujaba Patil's residence. As it halted, it gave a big lurch, sending the passengers helter-skelter, churned like a water in a pitcher when the carrier stumbles. (25) All the passengers got away. The coolie put his hand on huge wooden box and shouted, (26) "Whose box this is?" (Final Paper 2021-22)

Correct (22): Having gained this the bus had started Passengers …………..another.
Explanation: Since the earlier sentence is of past tense, “has” turns to “had” and sentence becomes past perfect tense but the more appropriate sentence is simple past tense just simply “started” without had. If two actions happened, Past Perfect Tense shows the first action with the structure had+past participle (v3) but in the sentence above, such sense does not come out.

Correct (23): The conductor rang the bell and the bus gradually took on speed.
Explanation: Yet often suggests something unexpected and extraordinary. The Conjunction “and” is used to add similar or related ideas.

Correct (24): It entered the village reluctantly …………………to school.
Explanation: The adverb reluctantly is suitable here.

Correct (25): All the passengers got down The coolie …………………shouted.
Explanation: Since the passengers were coming out, the proper word is down.

Correct (26): Whose box is this?"
Explanation: Since the sentence is a question, helping verb should come before the subject.
